The longest totalities

The five longest total eclipses of the century all happened in June or July, when the Earth is near its farthest point from the Sun and the Sun looks smallest. Three of them, in 1937, 1955 and 1973, were longer than seven minutes at greatest eclipse.

Totality is given for the point of greatest eclipse, from our own calculation with a smooth lunar edge; published values that model the mountains on the Moon’s limb are usually a few seconds shorter. Hybrid eclipses that were total at greatest eclipse, such as 20 April 2023, are included. How we calculate.
