Chasing Eclipses

Luxor named one of National Geographic’s best places to visit in 2027

The eclipse city makes the Best of the World 2027 list, with new hotels and a luxury sleeper train due to open next year.

20 October 2026

National Geographic has included Luxor in its Best of the World 2027 list of 25 destinations, published on 20 October 2026. The magazine points to the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027, which will darken the city for about six minutes, and expects demand around the eclipse to be overwhelming.

The article lists three openings planned for 2027: the restored Mandarin Oriental Winter Palace, a new Four Seasons Hotel Luxor, and the Guardian of the Nile, an 80-passenger luxury sleeper train that will stop in Luxor on its route between Cairo and Aswan.

For travellers, the practical message is the same as on our own Luxor page: most rooms in the city for eclipse week are already committed, so a tour, a Nile cruise or a base elsewhere in the Nile Valley is often the realistic way to see totality.
